Surroundings
Exploring the area from the water is highly recommended. The old canals were dug in the 14th century to connect several villages and towns. From the boat or from a lovely waterside terrace, you look out over Nature Reserve ‘De Vlietlanden’. In spring, this is a sea of flowers. The larger water of the Foppenplas is ideal for fishing. All this at 500m by boat or on foot. Sloops are rented out by Warbout rondvaarten.
An extensive network of cycle paths leads you among others to the cultural-historical city of Delft, glass city the Westland, old harbour town Maassluis on the Nieuwe Waterweg and the beach of Hoek van Holland. Or take the ferry in Maassluis to the South Holland islands.
The polders are perfect for a long walk along dykes and church paths, between cows and sheep. Take the bicycle ferry ‘de kwakel’ to Vlaardingen or the foot ferry to Schipluiden.
The restaurants Lickebaertshoeve, Indigo and buitenplaats Op Hodenpijl in Schipluiden for the gourmet. Teahouse ‘Bij de Buurvrouw’ within walking distance for the tastiest cakes. Or get fresh dairy and the tastiest cheese at van Winden's country shop. Pannekoekboerderij ’t Sonnetje is a children's favourite.
Culture abounds with the cities. The beautiful old town of Delft, the Binnenhof in The Hague and modern Rotterdam with e.g. the Markthal. But also Deltawerk Maeslandkering’ at Hoek van Holland is well worth a visit.
